ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To detect the body surface temperature of the relevant back-shu points in patients with chronic persistent asthma by infrared thermal imaging technology, and observe the specific changes of the body surface temperature of the relevant back-shu points under the condition of lung disease.@*METHODS@#Forty-five patients with chronic persistent asthma (observation group) and 45 healthy subjects (control group) were selected. The body surface temperature of bilateral Feishu (BL 13), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) were measured by BK-MT02A medical infrared thermography.@*RESULTS@#The body surface temperature of bilateral Feishu (BL 13), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The body surface temperature of bilateral Feishu (BL 13) and Geshu (BL 17) was higher than that of ipsilateral Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) in the two groups (P<0.01, P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in body surface temperature between ipsilateral Feishu (BL 13) and Geshu (BL 17), between ipsilateral Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) (P>0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The pathological increase of body surface temperature of Feishu (BL 13), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) in patients with chronic persistent asthma indicates that above acupoints have specificity in reflecting lung diseases. The Feishu (BL 13) and Geshu (BL 17), which have significantly increased body surface temperature, not only provide objective basis for the pathological pathogenesis of "deficiency in origin and excess in symptom" in patients with chronic persistent asthma, but also reflect the different expressions of different acupoints on the same meridian for the lung diseases.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the effect of moxa-cone moxibustion at lung's back-@*METHODS@#Sixty SPF-grade healthy male Balb/c mice were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, an LY294002 group (LY group), an electroacupuncture (EA) group and a moxibustion group, 12 mice in each group. Asthma model was replicated by using ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization. Except the mice in the normal group, all the mice were intraperitoneally injected with sensitization solution (containing 15 μg of OVA and 30 mg of aluminum hydroxide) on the 1st day, 7th day and 14th day, 0.5 mL per mice; from the 15th day, 1% OVA solution was atomized for 20 min, once a day for 2 weeks; the mice in the normal group was treated with identical operations but with 0.9% sodium chloride solution. The mice in the LY group were treated with injection of LY294002 at tail vein on the 13th day, 14th day and 15th day. At the beginning of the 15th day, The mice in the EA group were treated with EA at "Feishu" (BL 13) and "Zhongfu" (LU 1) with disperse-dense wave, frequency of 2 Hz/20 Hz, intensity of 1 mA, 15 min each time, once a day for 2 weeks. The mice in the moxibustion group was treated with moxa-cone moxibustion at "Feishu" (BL 13) and "Zhongfu" (LU 1) from the 15th day, three moxa-cones per acupoint, once a day for 2 weeks. On the 16th day, 18th day and 22nd day, the incubation period of asthma was recorded. On the 29th day, all the samples were collected. The expressions of IL-17 and IL-10 in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were detected by ELISA method. The pathological changes of lung tissue were observed by HE staining. The percentage of Th17, Treg and Th17/Treg ratio in spleen tissue were detected by flow cytometry method.@*RESULTS@#Compared with the normal group, the incubation period of asthma in the model group was significantly shortened (@*CONCLUSION@#The Th17/Treg is imbalanced in asthmatic body. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the mechanism of catgut embedding at back- points on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in rats based on IKK/IKB/NF-κB signaling pathway and downstream inflammatory factors.@*METHODS@#Eighty SPF SD rats were selected, among them 10 rats were selected divided into a normal group (group A), and the remaining 70 rats were fed with high-fat diet to establish NASH model. At the end of 12 weeks, 10 rats were randomly selected to verify whether the model establishment was successful. Then the remaining 60 rats were randomly divided into a model group (group B), a catgut embedding at back- points group (group C), a catgut embedding at abdominal points group (group D), an acupuncture at back- points group (group E), a sham catgut embedding group (group F) and a western medication group (group G), 10 rats in each group. The rats in the group C were treated with catgut embedding at "Ganshu" (BL 18), "Pishu" (BL 20), "Weishu" (BL 21) and "Shenshu" (BL 23); the rats in the group D were treated with catgut embedding at "Daheng" (SP 15), "Fujie" (SP 14), "Huaroumen" (ST 24) and "Tianshu" (ST 25); the rats in the group E were treated with acupuncture at the same acupoints as the group C; the rats in the group F were treated with catgut embedding at back- points but the needle did not enter subcutaneous tissue gamma; the rats in the group G were treated with intragastric administration of vitamin E capsule. All the treatment was given for 4 weeks. The rats in the group A were fed with normal diet until the end of 16 weeks without any intervention. The rats in the group B continued to be fed with high-fat diet until the end of 16 weeks. After the intervention, the liver index was calculated; the liver histomorphology was observed by HE staining; the liver function [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma glutamyl transferase (γ-GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP)] and blood lipid [serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL)] were measured by serum biochemistry. The serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1βwere detected by ELISA, and the expressions of IKK-α, NF-κBp65, IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α proteins in liver tissue were detected by Western blot. The temperature of the conception vessel and the governor vessel was measured by infrared thermography.@*RESULTS@#Compared with the group A, the obvious steatosis and inflammatory cell infiltration were observed in the group B, and the body weight, liver wet-weight and liver index were all increased (0.05), while the temperature of the governor vessel in the group C was superior to that in the group D (<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The catgut embedding at back- points might inhibit the activation of IKK/IKB/NF-κB signaling pathway to interrupt the inflammatory cascade, and reduce the "second hit" of inflammatory factors on liver, which could slow down NASH progress and prevent and treat NASH.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at five Back-Shu points on sleep, hippocampal peripheral benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) expression and hypothalamic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL)-1β contents in insomnia rats, so as to explore its mechanisms underlying improvement of insomnia. METHODS: Forty male SD rats were randomly divided into control, model, EA and medication (Diazepam) groups (n=10 rats in each group). The insomnia model was established by intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of para-Chlorophenylalanine (PCPA, 300 mg/kg) once daily for 2 days. EA (60 Hz, 1 mA) was applied to bilateral five Back-Shu points, i.e., Feishu (BL13), Xinshu (BL15), Ganshu (BL18), Pishu (BL20) and Shenshu (BL23) for 10 min, once daily for 6 days. Rats of the medication group were treated by gavage of Diazepam (0.92 mg/kg) once daily for 6 days. The sleep duration was recorded after i.p. of Pentobarbital Sodium (45 mg/kg). Histopathological changes of the hippocampus were displayed by H.E. staining. The contents of 5-HT, 5-HIAA, TNF-α and IL-1β in the hypothalamus were assessed by using ELISA. The expression levels of PBR mRNA and protein in the hippocampus were detected by quantitative real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and Western blot, separately. RESULTS: Following modeling, the sleep duration was considerably shortened in rats of the model group relevant to the control group (P0.05), and significantly superior to that of the medication in increasing TNF-α and IL-1β levels (P<0.05), and considerably superior to that of medication in down-regulating PBR mRNA and protein expression (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: EA at five Back-Shu-points of the five Zang-organs can significantly improve the sleep in insomnia rats, which is closely associated with its effects in reducing the expression of PBR in hippocampus and up-regulating the levels of 5-HT, 5-HIAA, TNF-α and IL-1β in hypothalamus.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the clinical efficacy differences between acupuncture at back- points of five , Geshu (BL 17), Shenmen (HT 7) and regular medication for the treatment of menopausal insomnia.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 128 female patients of menopausal insomnia were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 64 cases in each one. Four patients in the observation group and 2 patients in the control group dropped out during the treatment. The patients in the observation group were treated with acupuncture at Feishu (BL 13), Xinshu (BL 15), Pishu (BL 20), Ganshu (BL 18), Shenshu (BL 23), Geshu (BL 17) and Shenmen (HT 7), once a day, and there was an interval of 2 days between every 5 days of treatment. The patients in the control group were treated with oral administration of alprazolam (0.4 mg or 0.8 mg) before sleep. Three-week treatment was taken as one course, and totally three courses were given in the two groups. Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), levels of estradiol (E), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were observed before treatment and 30 days after treatment; the efficacy was evaluated 30 days after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Each item score and total score of PSQI 30 days after treatment were lower than those before treatment in the two groups (all <0.05), the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (all <0.05). The levels of E 30 days after treatment were higher than those before treatment in the two groups (both <0.05), but the level of FSH and LH 30 days after treatment were lower than those before treatment in the two groups; the level in the observation group was superior to that in the control group (all <0.05). The total effective rate was 98.3% (59/60) in the observation group, which was better than 95.2% (59/62) in the control group (<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Acupuncture at Feishu (BL 13), Xinshu (BL 15), Ganshu (BL 18), Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), Geshu (BL 17), and Shenmen (HT 7) has better efficacy for menopausal insomnia than alprazolam.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the regional homogeneity (ReHo) of resting-state brain function in the healthy subjects of gastric distention treated with acupuncture at the back- and front- points of the stomach, Weishu (BL 21) and Zhongwan (CV 12) and the correlation with gastric motility so as to explore the mechanism on the central integration of the front- and back- points of the stomach.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The crossover test design was adopted. Twenty-four healthy subjects were assigned to a Weishu group, a Zhongwan group and a combined-point group separately, 8 cases in each one in each of the three times. Totally, 24 subjects were included in each group. Under the water load condition, the subjects received acupuncture at Weishu (BL 21), Zhongwan (CV 12) and the combined Weishu (BL 21) and Zhongwan (CV 12). Before and after each acupuncture, the resting-state brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan and electrogastrogram (EGG) test were applied. The ReHo value was calculated in the collected fMRI imaging data. The changes in ReHo values were analyzed and compared before and after acupuncture in each group, as well as among the groups. The gastric motility was analyzed before and after acupuncture. Additionally, the correlative analysis was conducted between the gastric motility and ReHo changes before and after acupuncture.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1) After acupuncture, EGG amplitudes in the subjects of each group were lower remarkably as compared with those before acupuncture (all <0.01). The EGG frequencies were not different significantly as compared with those before acupuncture (all >0.05). The EGG amplitudes in the Weishu group and the Zhongwan group were higher than those in the combined-point group (both <0.05). (2) As compared with the conditions before acupuncture, acupuncture at the combined front- and the back- points as well as Weishu (BL 21) and Zhongwan (CV 12) separately all induced the changes in the brain ReHo. Acupuncture at the combined front- and the back- points significantly increased Reho values in the right inferior temporal gyrus, the left thalamus, the precuneus and the posterior cingulate gyrus (all <0.05) and remarkably reduced the ReHo values in the the middle temporal gyrus of the right temporal pole, sulcus calcarinus and precuneus (all <0.05). Compared with the single point groups, acupuncture at the combined front- and the back- points induced the increase of ReHo value in the posterior cingulate gyrus and the decrease of ReHo in the temporal pole (all <0.05). (3) The correlative analysis showed that the changes in the ReHo values in the posterior cingulate gyrus, the thalamus and the precuneus were positively correlated to the changes of the gastric motility amplitudes. The changes in the ReHo values in the temporal pole was negatively correlated to the changes of the gastric motility amplitudes.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Acupuncture at the combined back- and front- points of the stomach, as well as acupuncture at single Weishu (BL 21) and Zhongwan (CV 12) induce the ReHo changes in the different brain regions. Acupuncture at the combined back- and front- points of the stomach may induce the ReHo changes in some new brain regions as compared with the acupuncture at the single point. The thalamus, the posterior cingulate gyrus and the precuneus may be the the important integrated brain regions for acupuncture at the back- and the front- points in regulating the gastric motility. The effects of acupuncture at the back- and the front- points for the regulation of the gastric motility are closely related to the thalamus, the limbic system and the default network of the brain regions.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy and action mechanism of grain-sized moxibustion at Back-Shu points of Zang-organs in treating vascular cognitive impairment-no dementia (VCIND) due to marrow insufficiency. Method Ninety-two patients with VCIND due to marrow insufficiency were randomized into a grain-sized moxibustion group, an electroacupuncture group and a Western medication group. Since the grain-sized moxibustion group and electroacupuncture group each had 1 dropout case, there were 90 valid recruited cases, 30 in each group. Xinshu (BL15) and Shenshu (BL23) were selected as the major points, with Middle Line of Vertex (MS5), Middle Line of Forehead (MS1), Lateral Line 1 of Vertex (MS8), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Xuanzhong (GB39) and Taixi (KI3) as the adjunct points. The grain-sized moxibustion group and electroacupuncture group respectively received grain-sized moxibustion and electroacupuncture at Xinshu and Shenshu, and the adjunct points were treated with ordinary acupuncture. The intervention was given once a day, successive 5 d a week, and 4 weeks as a course of treatment, for 2 courses in total. The Western medication group was prescribed with oral administration of Piracetam tablet, 0.4 g per dose, 3 times a day, for successive 8 weeks. The clinical efficacies, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scores, homocysteine (Hcy) and folic acid contents in serum were compared among the three groups after 8 weeks. Result The total effective rate was 86.7% (26/30) in the grain-sized moxibustion group, superior to 63.3% (19/30) in the electroacupuncture group and 36.7% (11/30) in the Western medication group (P<0.05,P<0.01). The MoCA and ADL scores and serum contents of Hcy and folic acid were significantly improved after the treatment in the three groups (P<0.01), and the grain-sized moxibustion group was significantly better than the electroacupuncture group and Western medication group (P<0.05,P<0.01), and the electroacupuncture group and superior to the Western medication group (P<0.05). Conclusion Grain-sized moxibustion at Back-Shu points of Zang-organs can produce significant efficacy in treating VCIND due to marrow insufficiency, and the effect is possibly realized by declining Hcy and increasing folic acid levels in blood.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the relationship between the distributions of posterior ramus of spinal nerve (PRSN) and locations of acupoint in low back through anatomical observation.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The regional anatomy was performed at five corpses to observe the distribution of erector spinae muscle and PRSN in areas ofpoints and back-points in low back.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The T, L, L, Land LPRSN distributed on both sides of the spine; the medial branches of PRSN travelled between spinalis thoracis muscle and longissimus thoracis muscle, while the lateral branches of PRSN travelled between longissimus thoracis muscle and iliocostalis lumborum muscle.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b> points and back-points in low back are closely associated with PRSN, particularly T, L, L, Land L.</p>

ABSTRACT

Back-shu points were firstly discussed in(the), and various location methods of back-points had been proposed by acupuncturists until conclusive method was made indynasty. In this paper, the different location methods of back-points were reviewed; based on this, the reasons of divergences among each theory on location methods were discussed, and the theoretical background and reference of the original establishment of back-points were further explored. Therefore, it was proposed that the standardized location of back-points should be just considered as the center of possible distribution range, and adjustment should be made during clinical application according to the variability of individual combined with finger pressing.

Fifty-nine acupoints for febrile disease is recorded in(). By analyzing the combination of these acupoints, the writer discovered the acupoint composition and detected their origins from, in which the termsandare involved in the theoretic evidence. The writer thought the "fifty-nine acupoints for febrile disease" implied the self-evolution of some acupuncture school in ancient time, which was formed by absorbing the theoretic experiences of the other schools. It is necessary to analyze and interpret the other literatures besidesand probably obtain the further reorganization on it.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect difference betweendecoction combined with acupuncture at back-points and simpledecoction for chronic fatigue syndrome.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty patients were randomly assigned into an herbal group and a combination group, 30 cases in each one. Simpledecoction was used in the herbal group for continuous one month, one decoction a day. Based on that in the herbal group, 30 min acupuncture was used in the combination group at bilateral Xinshu (BL 15), Feishu (BL 13), Pishu (BL 20), Ganshu (BL 18) and Shenshu (BL 23), with acupoints according to syndrome differentiation. Acupuncture was given for 3 courses, 10 times as a course with 3 days between two courses, once a day. Fatigue status was evaluated before and after treatment by fatigue scale 14 (FS-14) and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The FS-14 scores, including body fatigue scores, mental fatigue scores and total scores, and SAS scores after treatment were lower than those before treatment in the two groups (all<0.01), with better improvements in the combination group (all<0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b> decoction combined with acupuncture at back-points can improve chronic fatigue syndrome, which are better than simpledecoction.</p>

ABSTRACT

The Back-Shu points of the five Zang-organs are a group of points where qi and blood pour into the back and lumbar regions. Acupuncture at these points has a wide indication scope. However, it’s reported that internal organs were punctured in some cases because of improper control of needling depth, angle, and intensity during acupuncture. We used perpendicular needling instead of conventional oblique needling during the acupuncture of the Back-Shu points of the five Zang-organs. We found that when patients were completely relaxed, acupoints were correctly selected, the needling depth, the way of holding the needle, and inserting methods were well controlled, perpendicular needling of the Back-Shu points of the five Zang-organs can produce stronger needling sensation, and it’s easier to operate, safer, and more effective compared to oblique needling.

Without detailed prescription, moxibustion was highly valued in this book and was applied for various types of pediatric emergency. With moxibustion for pediatric diseases inas starting point, three aspects, including caution about moxibustion, moxibustion at back-and moxibustion for febrile convulsion were discussed in this article.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the clinical efficacy differences between acupuncture combined with 40-min penetration moxibustion and 60-min penetration moxibustion at back-points for insomnia of insufficiency of heart and spleen type.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty patients of insomnia with insufficiency of heart and spleen type were randomly assigned into a 40-min group and a 60-min group. The two groups were treated with acupuncture at Jueyinshu (BL 14), Xinshu (BL 15), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20), Shendao (GV 11) and Zhiyang (GV 9). With moxibustion box, the penetration moxibustion was applied at the back until sweating and redness on the back. The moxibustion was given for 40 min in the 40-min group and 60 min in the 60-min group. The treatment was given once a day, five days per week. Each session was consisted of 5 treatments, with an interval of 2 days between session and totally 4 consecutive weeks were provided. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), TCM symptom scale were observed and recorded before and after treatment in the two groups. The even temperature at raising period, effective period, reducing period, as well as minimum high temperature, comfortable temperature, minimum cold temperature and medication status were compared; also the effect was compared between the two groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The total effective rate was 96.6% (28/29) in the 60-min group, which was higher than 89.3% (25/28) in the 40-min group (<0.05). Compared before treatment, the total score of PSQI and sleep quality, sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep disorder, daytime dysfunction as well as the total TCM symptom score and its drowsiress in the morning, palpitation, amnesia, appetite were reduced after treatment in the 40-min group (all<0.05). After treatment, the total score and each score of PSQI as well as total score and each score of TCM symptom scale were reduced after treatment in the 60-min group (all<0.05). After treatment, the total score and each score of PSQI as well as total score and each score of TCM symptom scale were significantly different between the two groups (all<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Acupuncture combined with penetration moxibustion can improve the symptomsof insomnia with insufficiency of heart and spleen type, which is more significant in the 60-min group, indicating prolonged time of penetration moxibustion can improve sleep latency.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the effect of gastrin, motilin of chronic atrophic gastritis model in rats by acupuncturing at back-shu points. Methods 60 SD rats were randomly divided into blank control group, model control group, omeprazole group, back-shu points group, with 15 rats in each group, and to establish the model of chronic atrophic gastritis by irregular diet that given rats odd and even days. The blank control group, model control group were fed with normal saline, 2ml/time, 1 time/day. The omeprazole group was given oral gavage(Omeprazole 0.44 mg/kg, Clarithromycin 6.92 mg/kg, Metronidazole 7.6 mg/kg), 1 time/day. Back-shu points group received acupuncture at “Geshu”“Ganshu”“Pishu”“Weishu”“Shenshu”, retaining 15 min, 1 time/day. After 30 days, the content of ELSIA was used to detect the serum gastrin, motilin. Results ①GAS of model control group(54.25±5.70)pg/ml was significantly decreased compared with blank control group(66.63± 5.99)pg/ml, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Compared with the model control group, GAS content of omeprazole group(62.70±8.55)pg/ml and back-shu Points group(66.27±3.79)pg/ml were higher, showed significant differences(P<0.05). ②MOT of model control group(223.60±17.83)pg/ml was significantly increased compared with the blank control group(188.45 ± 8.90)pg/ml, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). MOT of omeprazole group(200.16 ± 4.38)pg/ml and back-shu Points group(190.11±10.04)pg/ml were lower than those in the model control group, there was statistically significant difference(P<0.05). Conclusion Acupuncturing at back-shu acupoints can increase the content of GAS, reduce content of MOT, regulate gastrointestinal hormone in rats of chronic atrophic gastritis model.
